Professional Bates
Teacher Training
by
Dr. Jerriann Taber, Ph. D.
The Teacher Training at the Vision
Training Institute is based on the scientific discoveries of William H.
Bates. M.D., ophthalmologist, and furthered by Margaret D. Corbett.
Mrs. Corbett was personally trained by Dr. Bates and spent 35 years of
her life dedicated to teaching others how to improve their vision
through education, thus preserving the Bates Method for future
generations.
The training course offered at V. T. I. is
the complete course as handed down from Dr. Bates to Margaret Corbett
plus my 35 years experience and training as a therapist in Hypnotherapy,
Reichian therapy ,Kinesiology and the Rapid Healing Technique. My Ph.
D. is in psychology.
WHAT YOU AS A PROFESSIONAL BATES
TEACHER CAN OFFER
A natural method of self-improvement
specifically for the eyes and vision; an alternative to the mechanical
approach to visual blur. The Bates Method reaches into underlying
causes; visual education applicable to everyone through relaxation,
movement, imagery and an understanding of the visual process; a helping
relationship to people which can deeply affect their inner being. The
way in which a person sees and relates to the visual world reflects
their total attitude toward life.
I do teacher training in San Diego. The time required in San Diego is
approximately 8 weeks. Depending on where people live the time frame
can be adjusted. Requirements for starting
a class are a minimum of three qualified people. For more
qualification, details and information contact Dr. Taber by mail or
e-mail drtaber@eyerobics.net

COLLEGE OF VISION EDUCATION
with Margaret Montgomery and Aileen Whiteford
Beginning January
2008
CVE is an established training school with an international
reputation, training teachers in the Bates Method of natural
eyesight improvement. We are pleased to announce that we have made
some exciting changes to our training format: providing two training
strands. One - enabling students to receive the College Diploma and
become qualified ‘Bates’ teachers in 12 months, and two - a shorter
option for individuals not interested in teaching, but just
improving their own vision using the Bates Method. To
accommodate these two options the course starts with an introductory
six day residential, designed to meet the needs of both groups. The
main focus of the training is on practical experience of the
classical techniques of Dr William H. Bates (1860-1931) taught in an
up-to-date wholistic way.
The teacher training course extends over the twelve months as
follows - two 6 day residentials and 9 non-residential
weekends of Friday evening, all day Saturday and Sunday.
Sample course content includes:-
• The fundamental principles of Dr. Bates’ Method:-
- rest
- relaxation
- awareness/ attention
- movement
- memory and imagination
• Learning to apply the method regardless of the nature or origin of
the eyesight difficulty.
• Normal structure and function of the eyes.
• The effects of general health on vision.
• Introduction to other natural therapies
• Personal and professional development.
• Teaching individuals in all age groups sometimes even very young
children.
• Supervised teaching practice at the Bates Vision Clinic.
Requirements for course completion include class attendance,
assignments, reading, keeping a log book and a personal ‘vision’
journal. Informal and formal assessment is ongoing throughout the
course.
On successful completion the graduate teacher will have:-
A sound understanding of the theory and practice of the Bates Method
Practical experience in teaching the ‘Method’.
The knowledge, skill and confidence to set up their own Bates Vision
practice
Graduates will be eligible to apply for membership of the Bates
Association for Vision Education and the Association of Vision
Educators.
Why Natural Vision Education?
The Bates Method provides a wholistic approach to understanding the
complex nature of eyesight and offers a natural, practical way to
maintain and improve vision. Dr. Bates contended that mental and
physical strain in the form of unconscious, tense vision habits and
a bored, strained mind is the true cause of vision problems. He also
maintained that if eyesight could worsen it could improve. He firmly
believed that the use of corrective lenses contributed to eyesight
deterioration.
In our world where people are becoming more interested in ‘natural
health’ the ‘Method’ is becoming an increasingly popular alternative
to glasses, contact lenses and laser techniques
Bates teachers are not optometrists, and as such do not diagnose or
prescribe for treatment of eye problems. Clients with eye problems
are encouraged to seek such services from their medical eye
specialist.
For nearly one hundred years Bates teachers have been helping people
to take care of and maintain their naturally good eyesight as
a life-long resource.
The co-founders and principal teachers of the CVE are practising
Bates Teachers with many years of experience both as teachers and
trainers of teachers.
